Sean McComb could be in preparation for the biggest fight of his career on the Haney-Garcia undercard
The Irish Super Lightweight hasn’t fought since December, defending his WBO European strap against Sam Maxwell in Belfast.
‘The Public Nuisance’ is now sitting comfortably at #8 in the WBO rankings, and it looks increasingly likely that the Belfast boxer will have an opportunity to compete for world honours before the year closes.
The boxing rumour mill has been linking McComb to a title eliminator fight on a major US card in the coming weeks. The eliminator is slated to take place on the April 20 card that sees Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia headline in New York.
His proposed opponent for the bout, Arnold Barboza Jr., is currently undefeated and sitting at #1 in the WBO rankings.
No official details have been released, however, in an interview with Boxing Social, the 31-year-old teased a huge matchup.
“My name’s been thrown around by some big names in boxing and for me it’s very exciting because it’s somewhere I believe I’ve always belonged, amongst those names.
“Lee Eaton and LetsGo Management have done a massive job on getting me this fight.”
McComb continued to play his cards close to his chest, however, he did confirm that the proposed fight will take place overseas.
“Yeah, it’s an away day. It’s a pretty cool place, let’s put it that way.
“It’s gonna be full of big personalities and big egos and I’ll fit right in there, I’ll fit like a glove. There’s no pressure on me whatsoever, I’m gonna go over there and I’m gonna enjoy it. I’m gonna put on a performance, I’m fully switched on, fully focused.”
If the rumours are true and Barboza is his mystery opponent, the Irishman no doubt will be in for the toughest fight of his career.
His American counterpart has floated around the top of the division for some time, amassing a record full of impressive wins. His most recent outing saw him come back from a nearly year-long hiatus, taking out Xolisani Ndongeni after eight rounds.
