Gervonta Davis vs Conor Benn negotiations begin
An online spat between Conor Benn and Gervonta Davis has now been turned into an official of a fight according to promoter Eddie Hearn
Benn is coming off the back of a 12-round points decision win over ‘Pistol’ Pete Dobson last Saturday. The fight was his LAs Vegas debut and only a second contest in almost two years following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after his two failed drug tests before the ill-fated fight with Chris Eubank Jr back in October 2023.
Once the fight was over, Benn took to X and revealed a personal hitlist of fighters he would love to take on. In the ring after the fight, Hearn named Churs Eubank Jr as the number one target but now that seems to have shifted.
One of the men called out by Benn was multi-weight champion Gervonta Davis. He was quick to respond and informally accept as plenty of heated words were exchanged between the two.
Speaking to Matchroom’s YouTube channel, Hearn has now confirmed negotiations are underway.
“I’ve spoken to Gervonta personally and he will be receiving an offer from us today for that fight.”
He then discussed where it might happen and at what weight.
“Huge fight. It could happen in the UK but I think we’ll be looking at America for that. You’ve got two fiery characters. Gervonta is an outstanding fighter. Super-featherweight coming up to lightweight to box at 140 but never boxed at 147.”
He then recognised it would be by far the biggest test of Benn’s career.
‘It’s a really tough fight for Conor Benn, Gervonta is a pound-for-pound great, but I like the size advantage in that fight. For the first time in a few fights, he’ll be fighting someone smaller than him. But he can really crack. It’s a big fight, but that’s what Conor wants, he wants those sorts of tests.”
Should this fight happen, it would be a huge night and a big chance for Benn to really cement his status on the world stage.
