Things you didn't know about Dennis McCann next opponent Charles Tondo
Brilliant bantamweight star Dennis McCann (11-0, 6KOs) will fight for the WBO Youth world title over eight rounds against Charles Tondo (12-4-2, 5 KOs) on the undercard of David Avanesyan's fifth European welterweight title defence to undefeated Finn Oskari Metz on March 19 at the OVO Arena, Wembley, live on BT Sport.
As it's only his second time fighting in the UK, there's not much that is known about the Tanzanian, so BBN have listed a few interesting facts below:
Who is Charles Tondo?
Born February 2nd, 1999, Charles L Tondo is 23-years-old from Dar-Es-Salaam, which is the largest city and financial hub of Tanzania. Boxing is one of the most popular sports of the region, behind football and golf. Home to over six million people, it was once home ro one of Britain’s most famous storytellers, Roald Dahl, who lived there for five years between 1934 to 1939.
After 18 bouts and 81 rounds, Tondo is the fourth ranked bantamweight in his country.
He calls himself, '20-Punch Jr.'.
Tondo had a checkered start to his career, only winning four from his first nine fights, but has since won eight of his last nine bouts. Four of his last five wins ended in knockouts.
The East African was only seen in the UK three months ago, last December, fighting against British flyweight champion Tommy Frank (15-2, 3KOs). Tondo took the British champ the distance over eight rounds at the Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield. Every other fight has been located in his home country.
Tondo is a southpaw, just like his forthcoming foe, McCann.
McCann's last opponent was John Chuwa – a 23-year-old from Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, with four losses on his record, who had fought in England only once before against Tommy Frank… sound familiar?!
This will be Tondo's first ever title fight. The WBO Youth World bantamweight belt is on the line, which has formerly been held by just two champions before. Tao Ji, from China, was the first titleholder in 2011; then came Puerto Rican Jeyvier Cintron, who went on to challenge for the WBO World super flyweight title in his 12th fight. He lost a unanimous decision to Kazuto Ioka, who has been the reigning champion for three years now.
He is a brand ambassador for OnTrack, a premium manufacturer for private label sports gear specializing in Boxing, MMA & BJJ Suits, located in Pakistan.
