Who is John Chuwa?
Facts you need to know about John Chuwa, Dennis McCann’s next opponent
Tanzanian John Chuwa (20-4, 10KOs) visits England on July 10 with bad intentions as he bids to become the first man to beat Dennis McCann (9-0, 5KOs).
The pair are set to battle it out over eight-rounds at bantamweight, but not much is known about the East African, so BBN found out some little-known facts right here:
Early Life
John Frenk Chuwa was born and raised in Dar es Salaam, which is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania. It is the biggest city in East Africa – home to over six million people – and the fifth largest city in Africa. Its title translates to ‘Place of Peace’ and one of Britain’s most famous storytellers, Roald Dahl, lived there for five years between 1934 to 1939. Football, golf and boxing are among the most popular sports there.
Nickname
He is known to fans as the ‘Ninja’.
Team Ninja
Chuwa is managed by well-known British matchmaker, Derek Waddell.
Pro Career
John raced to 10-0 within the first seven months of his pro career, which started with his debut in October 2016. He celebrated his 10th professional win by claiming the Tanzanian national title at minimumweight. He has since suffered four defeats, three of those at the hands of British boxers – Prince Patel; Ross Murray; Tommy Frank.
Opponents
Chuwa’s 25 opponents, including McCann, have a combined record of 83-34-7. Four of his opponents have been debutants and seven were undefeated.
Tanzania Champion
John Chuwa was the first ever boxer to win the Tanzania Professional Boxing Commission Minimumweight Title in May 2017. The only other champion to follow Chuwa was Hamza Mchanjo , who is still the reigning titleholder.
Chuwa defeated Richard Mkude for the second time to claim the national title, but it was third time lucky for his rival who got his revenge just three months after becoming the champion when he beat him 59-55 in a six-rounder. In their next fight, Chuwa knocked him out for the first time in the eighth round. They fought four times in the same year, sharing 28 rounds with each other in just seven months.
Home and Away
Chuwa fought his first 17 fights on home soil in Tanzania, but has been abroad three times in his last seven contests – firstly to Budapest to face Prince Patel over eight rounds; then to Glasgow, Scotland to go 10-rounds with Ross Murray with the vacant World Boxing Council International Silver Light Fly Title at stake; then to Sheffield, England to oppose Tommy Frank, who became the first and only man to stop him (seventh round).
