Team GB seal record boxing medal haul at Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Team GB seal record boxing medal haul at Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Anthony Joshua congratulates ‘history makers’ after Pat McCormack takes silver.
The Olympic boxing format sees both losing semi-finalists guaranteed a bronze medal, with silver obviously going to the defeated finalist and gold to the victor.
GB’s 2020 tally of six medals is a modern record, with the achievement not being matched since 1920, when the format was very different and far fewer nations entered.
Galal Yafai’s quarter-final triumph on Tuesday morning guaranteed him at least bronze in the flyweight division.
He will now attempt to take this further and improve to silver or gold in his semi-final against Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov on Thursday at 6:48am UK time.

Also on Tuesday, Pat McCormack was confirmed for a silver medal as he was outclassed in his final by Cuba’s Roniel Iglesias.
The bout began tentatively with both men frustrating their opposition with impressive defence.
Iglesias appeared to land the most clean work in round one and four of the five judges scored it in his favour.
McCormack was floored by a left hook in the second, but the referee ruled no knockdown as the fighters’ feet tangled at the moment the punch landed.
The Brit struggled to find a breakthrough and all five judges scored round two for Iglesias.
The Cuban saw out the win in round three and claimed gold, while McCormack took silver.
Frazer Clarke is guaranteed at least bronze at super-heavyweight and will look to improve it in his semi-final against Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov on Wednesday at 7:03am.
Kariss Artingstall confirmed her featherweight medal will be bronze as she was beaten in her semi-final on Saturday.
Lauren Price is guaranteed at least bronze at middleweight and hopes to improve to silver or gold in her semi-final against Netherlands’ Nouchka Fontijn on Friday at 6:00am.
And Ben Whittaker is guaranteed at least silver at light-heavyweight and will go for gold in the final against Cuba’s Arlen Lopez on Wednesday at 7:35am.
