Canelo-Plant Judges and Referee are named
Familiar officials have been assigned to the Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant fight Saturday night.
BoxingScene.com has confirmed that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has picked veteran Nevada judges Dave Moretti and Patricia Morse Jarman and New Jersey’s Steve Weisfeld to score their 12-round, 168-pound title unification fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Another Nevada veteran, Russell Mora, has been chosen as the referee for their Showtime Pay-Per-View main event.
This will mark the third time since September 2018 that Moretti and Weisfeld have worked an Alvarez fight together.
Most recently, Moretti and Weisfeld scored Alvarez a 115-113 winner over Daniel Jacobs in their 12-round middleweight title unification fight in May 2019 at T-Mobile Arena. Connecticut’s Glenn Feldman credited Alvarez with a 116-112 win against Jacobs, who lost a unanimous decision.
Two fights earlier, Moretti and Weisfeld each gave Alvarez credit for a 115-113 win against Gennadiy Golovkin in their 12-round middleweight championship rematch at T-Mobile Arena. Feldman had it even, 114-114, in September 2018, when Alvarez won a majority decision.
Overall, Moretti has judged 10 of Alvarez’s professional fights. Most notably, Moretti scored Alvarez a 116-112 loser to Floyd Mayweather in their 12-round junior middleweight title fight in September 2013 at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Weisfeld has worked three of Alvarez’s bouts.
Morse Jarman has scored only one of Alvarez’s bouts, but not since she had him ahead of Jose Cotto, 78-73, in a bout Alvarez won by ninth-round technical knockout in May 2010 at MGM Grand Garden Arena. While not as established as a top judge as Moretti or Weisfeld, Morse Jarman has been one of Nevada’s most consistently solid scorers in recent years.
She did, however, have Jamal James ahead of Radzhab Butaev through eight rounds, 76-75, in Showtime’s main event Saturday night at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena. The two other judges – California’s Max De Luca and Connecticut’s Don Trella – had Russia’s Butaev in front of Minneapolis’ James by the same score, 77-74, before referee Celestino Ruiz stopped their scheduled 12-round WBA world welterweight title fight at 2:12 of the ninth round
Mora, meanwhile, has worked one Alvarez fight as well. He was the referee for Alvarez’s 11th-round knockout of Sergey Kovalev in their light heavyweight title fight two years ago at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Alvarez viciously knocked out Kovalev in that closely contested bout.
Mora most recently drew praise for how he handled the epic five-knockdown heavyweight championship bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. He allowed a seemingly exhausted Wilder to remain in the fight longer than some referees might’ve permitted, which led to Wilder having his moments in a WBC title fight Fury won emphatically by 11th-round knockout.
