Liam Williams vs Demetrius Andrade confirmed
Welshman Liam Williams will finally get his chance to become world champion after a deal was agreed for him to face WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade.
Purse bids were set to be held for the highly-anticipated fight on Wednesday, but a deal was reached between the two fighters prior to the bids taking place.
Promoter Frank Warren announced this statement on February 10: "Delighted that terms have been agreed forLiam Williams to finally challenge Demetrius Andrade for the WBO World middleweight title in the USA in April. Big chance for 'The Machine' to show the world what we've known all along… he is a world champion in the making."
Williams (23-2-1, 18 KOs) has been in sensational form since moving up to middleweight, with all five of his fights in that division ending in knockout wins.
He won the British middleweight title with a stoppage win over Mark Heffron, before following that up with two successful defences, knocking out Joe Mullender emphatically and Andrew Robinson in one round.
28-year-old Williams has also made an impact on the world stage during that time, knocking out Karim Achour and Alantez Fox in 2019, with both of those men never being stopped before facing the Welshman.
His only two reverses came in bitter battles with rival Liam Smith in back to back wars in 2017. The first fight ended early in great controversy after a headbutt forced Williams to retire even though he was leading on the scorecards. In the rematch, Liverpool's Smith, a former world champion, made the necessary adjustments to win via mixed decision.
American Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) won the belt after it was vacated back in 2018, defeating Walter Kautondowka to become champion. Since then, he has made three successful defences, beating Artur Akavov, Marciej Sulecki, and Irishman Luke Keeler.
Ranked WBC #3 and WBO #2, Williams has surpassed domestic level as a two-weight British champion and earned his shot at world honours after defeating the WBO #1 Alantez Fox. His valiant efforts against Liam Smith proves he can more than mix it at the very top.
News on a date and location for the fight between Williams and Andrade will be announced in due course.
