Background
In what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest nights for women’s boxing in the UK this year, Hannah Rankin aims to become a two-time world champion against veteran Maria Lindberg Guy Fawkes Night.
Scotland’s Rankin was formely an IBO titleholder in June 2019 before losing it a few months later in her first defence to another Swede, Patricia Berghult. She now has a chance to regain her old title plus the WBA bauble too, which was formerly held by Costa Rican, Hanna Gabriels, who remarkably moved up almost 2stone in weight to win the WBC World Female heavyweight title earlier this year.
Hannah – who also doubles as a professional musician – is recognised as one of the UK, and the world’s, best super welterweights and has been in with the globe’s best fighters and come away with plenty of plaudits each time. In 2018, Rankin gave history-making Michiganian Claressa Shields 10 hard rounds in an away-from-home loss in the States; while last year she pushed big-hitting boxing sensation Savannah Marshall all the way before succumbing to defeat inside seven.
Lindberg will be another tough ask for the brave Brit, being vastly more experienced. The Malmo native has lost just seven times in 29 outings, and has stopped 10 of her opponents. A former world champion herself having previously held the International Boxing Federation (IBF) crown, Lindberg will put it all on the line against Rankin, knowing this is possibly her last chance at the big time.

Predictions
Tim Rickson,BBN Editor: “On home soil, I belive the Brit can do the business. Both were beaten by the brilliant Savannah Marshall in each of their last contests, with Rankin lasting four rounds more than Lindberg, although the Swede took the fight at late notice and not long after recovering from COVID. I think they will both be thinking this is their best shot at a world title right now, with female boxing gaining more and more depth in quality every passing day. The younger, fresher fighter, 13 years the junior, Hannah Rankin should be able to her superior size and skill to outbox Lindberg to win on points.”
