Background: Back in 2012, both these athletes won an Olympic Gold medal at the historic London Games, which is what made the build-up to their first fight so exciting and interesting.
Usyk is the only ever four-belt undisputed world cruiserweight champion in boxing history and has now secured his legacy by becoming a world heavyweight champion.
He and Joshua debuted a month apart towards the end of 2013, but it was Usyk who secured silverware first by winning the interim WBO Inter-Continental cruiserweight title in his fith fight within a year from his pro bow. AJ secured his first title in May 2015 with a second-round stoppage of gatekeeper Kevin Johnson to claim the WBC International heavyweight belt. He added the Commonwealth title in his next fight in September 2015, but by that time, Usyk had made four defences of his WBO Inter-Continental strap, so the Ukrainian has always been ahead of him, although it was AJ who won the first world title of the two, by beating Charles Martin in April 2016 for the IBF strap. Usyk caught up five months later by decisioning 26-0 Krzysztof Glowackito land the WBO cruiser crown.
Joshua then was the first to become a unified world titlist with his epic 11th-round victory over Wladimir Klitschko in April 2017 to hold the WBA Super, IBF, and IBO belts. Usyk became a unified champ in January 2018 when he added the WBC belt with mixed decision win over 23-0 Mairis Briedis in the WBSS semi-final. It was his next fight that he made history unanimously outpointed 26-0 Murat Gassiev to win all four world titles for the first time in boxing history. Joshua also did the same that year, two months later, by adding the WBO belt to take his hoard up to four world titles.
In what was a real pick 'em fight, the defending champion mistakenly tried to box with the boxer and was completely outfoxed all fight in his own backyard in Tottenham. AJ had brief moments of success, but his lack of ability to adapt or change his failing tactics cost him the fight and all of his titles for a second time in his career.
The Londoner is expected to come back stronger and to use his size, weight and strength advantages in the return fixture.
Predictions: From BBN Editor, Tim Rickson, “In their first fight, I expected Usyk to be the better boxer but to get denied the win on the home scorecards, I even thought a draw might have been a possibility. Instead, Usyk get the decision clearly after cleverly outboxing AJ all fight long, as I expected he would do. Although I believe AJ will come back stronger and try to bully and hurt Usyk in the rematch, I still think Usyk wins again. He has fought every style, shape, size and skill there is, and has come through them all. As AJ will be looking for the knockout this time, I believe Usyk will be able to catch him and hurt him while he's opening up. Joshua has room for improvement, so he will bounce back as a better boxer in this bout, whereas Usyk will be much the same, however, he is an intelligent fighter and will surely have AJ's number after 12 previous rounds with him. Sometimes, the Ukrainian starts slow, where he is taking time to work his opponent out, then comes on strong to dominate. So Joshua's best chance is to swarm him in the opening rounds, but he's known for gassing so this could be a mistake. AJ was seconds away from being stopped in that final round, so I think we'll see a similar situation but earlier on in the fight when Joshua tries to force the action, with this time Usyk following through and getting the stoppage.”
