Andrew Cain suffers injury during first loss to Ionut Baluta
Everton Red Triangle's Andrew Cain broke his hand in the very first round of his fight with Ionut Baluat on March 25 in Telford, live on BT Sport.
The Liverpool prospect dropped the Romanian twice in the opening round but then damaged his hand. The WBC International Silver super-bantamweight champion started blisteringly fast landing in threes and fours in the very first minute. An incredible overhand right dropped Baluta within the first 50 seconds and it seemed like the writing was on the wall, but then an injury occured that changed the course of the fight.
A disappointed Cain said afterwards, "If I had two hands I would have finished him."
The 26-year-old Merseysider wants the immediate rematch, "I'll stop him. That first round, I had two hands. After that, I had one. I couldn't throw it again because I was getting excruciating pain. I respect him cos he's brave and tough, but that's all he is, he's not a good fighter, I'd beat him on any given day if I had two hands, I'm just devastated."
Baluta caught Cain with a right hand on the chin in the ninth round which dropped him into the ropes but he didn't go down to the canvas. The man from Madrid thrw the kitchen sink at him but he was happy to hold his feet and fire back.
Scores were 92-95, 93, 94 against and 96-91 for.
Carl Frampton instantly tweeted his surprise at the shock result, "Andrew Cain will be disappointed, but he shouldn't be too hard on himself. Won by a fair margin in my eyes. Bold statement, but he still becomes world champion."
Reactions on Twitter were of disappointment at the result, "Joke of a decision", said one account, and, "Joke decision that. No way Baluta won that. Sorry."
