De La Hoya has revealed he is intrigued by a 5 vs 5 format following the success of the Queensberry-Matchroom event
On Saturday, June 1st, the UK’s top two promoters, Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren, pitted their best fighters against each other in a historic first-of-its-kind 5 v 5 event.
Warren’s Queensberry Promotions came out on top, winning all five of the matchups, with a final score reading 8-0 in favour of the 72-year-old’s superior stable.
The evening culminated with Deontay Wilder taking on Zhilei Zhang in an explosive heavyweight main event contest, in a fight that everyone knew would end in a knockout.
The Chinese power of Zhilei Zhang proved too strong for Wilder, finishing the American in the fifth round with a brutal combination, seeing ‘The Bronze Bomber’ folded onto the canvas heavily and in no start to continue.
The inaugural event was a huge success and has since gained the attention of other promotions, who seemed enticed by the intriguing format.
Oscar De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions has revealed he would love to set up a five-versus-five event against fellow American promotion, Top Rank.
“Great concept by @Turki_alalshikh @GoldenBoyBoxing vs @TopRank in Las Vegas,” De La Hoya tweeted.
“Goldenboy vs Top Rank in Vegas is huge!!!! @BobArum let’s talk.”
This is not the first time this concept has been discussed between these two promotions, with Golden Boy President, Eric Gomez, previously disclosing that the rival promotions have already been in contact to discuss the idea.
“We were approached early this year by Top Rank and Bob Arum and he wanted to get something together,” Gomez revealed to Boxing Scene.
“I think in the near future you will see something very likely with any of the big promoters,” Gomez said.
De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions have a wealth of variety to their roster, featuring stars such as Ryan Garcia, William Zepeda and Vergil Ortiz, an event of this style would appear very well suited to the organisation.
