Floyd Mayweather meets grandson of infamous mob boss John Gotti III in Mexico
Floyd Mayweather vs John Gotti III rematch scheduled for Augsut 24 in Mexico
Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III met in the ring once before, in June 2023, which ended in complete chaos as the grandson of the former Gambino boss, John Gotti, tried to fight ‘Pretty Boy’ after the final bell had gone.
The five-weight world champion toyed with the active pro boxer, who has a 2-0, 1KO record, until referee Kenny Bayliss disqualified Gotti in the sixth round of a scheduled eight. The official had warned the fighter and his corner for their constant trash talking on several occasions.
The problem was that both Mayweather and Gotti weren’t finished and each wanted to continue, with Floyd waving him on. Then, Gotti raced across the ring throwing punches at Mayweather, who backed up to the ropes before the ring was filled with dozens of people pulling them apart.
Gotti was described as “helpless” by one boxing journalist, offering very little in return to Mayweather’s ceaseless onslaughts, covering up and barely throwing anything back.
Floyd Mayweather finished his career at 50-0 after knocking out Conor McGregor in 2017, seven years ago now, and has since taken part in lucrative exhibition bouts.
In the other corner, John Gotti III has his family’s name and legacy on the line, plus he will want to absolve himself after such a poor performance last time and for the ensuing controversy.
Floyd is now 47-years-old, so Gotti has youth on his side at just 31.
Who is John Gotti III?
John Gotti III is the grandson of the legendary mafia boss John Gotti.
His father, John Angelo Gotti, became the acting boss of the Gambino crime family from 1991 to 1999 when his father was sent to prison.
In 1990, John Angelo Gotti married Kimberly Albanese and had six children together in Oyster Bay Cove on Long Island’s North Shore. He was imprisoned for racketeering in 1999.
John Gotti III became an MMA fighter in 2017, winning five straight fights.
“There’s no getting around it. Throughout my career, the name is always going to be attached to me,” Gotti told Bleacher Report when he first started in combat sports. “My father and my grandfather, they’re a part of me. But this is a different avenue that I’m taking. Nobody in my family ever pursued sports to this degree or became a professional athlete. They never went down that road, so this is a whole different road I’m going down. It’s not like my name is Frank, like my brother. I share the name ‘John Gotti’. I want to put it in a positive spotlight and show people that I’m a hard-working kid and I’m dedicated to this game.”
He turned pro in boxing in 2022, winning his debut on points in October that year, then knocking out his next opponent in January 2023, with just one second left in the first round.
