Eridson Garcia returns to the spotlight – ready to put down a marker for new boxing switch
Super featherweight Eridson Garcia puts himself back in the spotlight after nine months out of the ring when he headlines the first BiYu Brawl in Houston on Saturday.
Garcia (19-1-0, 12KOs) is squaring up to 26-year-old Nicaraguan Jeovanny Antonio Tellez (13-2-0, 9KOs) over eight rounds, in what is potentially his final fight with BiYu Promotions and promoter Bobby Harrison.
Fans will be able to witness the fight – and the full BiYu Brawl card – via a live stream on BiYuBoxing.com.
It is an opportunity for the 30-year-old Dominican Republic puncher, who is determined to seal a crack at a world title, to put down a marker ahead of being part of boxing’s new revolution.
Garcia, who has signed to join a recently announced new boxing league which is still being finalised by its founders, is ready to use that as a springboard to achieve his career aims.
He said: “I have no idea what they intend to do as it is a new company but I hope it will be something big and I’m going all out and I’m going to do my best.
“I would like to be offered the biggest challenges to fulfil my goals and dreams and to grow together and if they offer me big challenges it gives me more security.
“I still have a lot of desire to be the world champion in different divisions and more desire than when I started my career.
“I have the utmost respect for Bobby Harrison, and who will continue to be my manager. He contributed a lot in my career and is a very important person for me.”
Garcia, whose last outing in July saw him secure a unanimous decision against William Foster III, is ready to shine this weekend against his relatively unknown opponent.
“It’s been a long time since my last fight and I’m really looking forward to getting back in the ring so I can do what I love,” said Garcia, currently ranked 14th by the WBA.
“The night is about doing my job, doing what I love. It’s time to shine.
“I don’t know much about my opponent, I’ve only seen a few videos of him fighting, he’s a good fighter but I’m better and I’m faster. My preparation has been good and I’ve been focused on working out how each fight gives the best of me.”
Harrison’s BiYu Brawl, which is being held in his own Club Hefe venue in northern Houston, also features the return of Ohio big-hitter Chavon Davis, who has been out of action for 18 months.
Davis (4-0-0, 4KOs) takes on California’s Michael Nelson (4-1-0, 2KOs) in a six round light heavyweight contest. The co-main event is expected to be an explosive bout – which is unlikely to go the distance.
The promising 25-year-old southpaw, formerly on the books of PBC, steps into the ring looking to maintain his 100 percent knockout record and showcase his undoubted talent, which could secure him a contract with Harrison’s stable.
Harrison has described him as ‘the real deal’ having witnessed some explosive punching in his sparring sessions.
Super Bantamweight Erick Rosado (14-2-0,10KOs) will be making his US fight debut and the 25-year-old is eager to erase his recent defeat to Jerry Zuniga (3-4-0) when contests an eight-rounder against 27-year-old Texan Joshua ‘Spotlight’ Montoya (6-4-2, 0Kos).
New Jersey’s Jason ‘The Don’ Moreno (4-0-0) steps in at short notice aiming to maintain his unbeaten pro record in a six-round super welterweight contest against 23-year-old Mexican-born Jesus Maldonado (6-12-1, 4KOs).
The card also features unbeaten Houston-based lightweight Christopher S Gonzalez (7-0-0, 4KOs), who will take on Mexican Joshua Briones Garcia (3-3-0, 2KOs) over six rounds.
Veteran super featherweight Kenneth ‘The Problem Child’ Taylor (14-4-2, 6KOs) will take on 24-year-old Mexican Joseph Cruz Brown (10-13-0, 6KOs) over six rounds.
The very first BiYu Brawl, from Club Hefe, will be live streamed on BiYuBoxing.com
