Devin Haney’s decade-long feud with Ryan Garcia continues
Devin Haney has declared that he’s planning to take further legal action against Ryan Garcia following his one-year drugs ban.
The 25-year-old Haney is adamant that he would be earning more for his next fight had the Garcia situation never happened and believes the Sandor Martin purse bids reveal this to be true: “My lawyers will do what they’ve gotta do to prove that in court against Ryan. We will take legal action because it has affected me – not only financially, but mentally and everything.” [@TitleSportsNet].
Ryan Garcia came in well over the agreed weight limit for their WBC World super-lightweight championship contest on April 20, then was able to floor the defending champion three times during their grudge match to win on points.
However, Garcia has now failed multiple drug tests and has now been dealt with a 12-months ban.
Garcia’s settlement with the New York State Athletic Commission also sees him lose his career-best victory over bitter rival Haney, with the fight officially becoming a no contest.
He will be forced to forfeit his $1.1 million contract purse and pay a $10,000 fine, the state maximum.
Garcia soon confirmed that his win was vacated via social media, and echoed his Wednesday announcement that he is supposedly retired, now looking to move to the UFC instead.
UFC light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira has set the world alight in his time with Dana White’s promotion and has already sent an offer to train Ryan Garcia in the UFC following his ban.
Speaking to Stake.com, Pereira said, “I would train Ryan Garcia for sure! Look at everything he has done for boxing. I have seen in a couple of interviews where he talks about me a lot. He always talks about his left hook, and I have good hooks myself. I think he likes and respects me so it would be very cool.”
