Benavidez will remain interim WBC light heavyweight champion
The World Boxing Council received a letter from promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, confirming that David Benavidez will remain in the light heavyweight division.
Benavidez became the mandatory challenger for the WBC light heavyweight title, currently held by Artur Beterbiev, when he decisioned former world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
As the WBC Interim light-heavyweight champion, he will face the winner of the long-awaited fight between unbeaten champions Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitrii Bivol, on October 12.
Although the prospect of ‘The Monster’ facing either Beterbiev or Bivol sounds tantalising, it’s not the fight the entire world really wanted to see first.
The 27-year-old had been calling for the Canelo fight for years, but eventually couldn’t wait around any longer and was forced to move up to 175lbs, where he will remain for the foreseeable.
The Mexican megastar always claimed that DB brought nothing to the table and named his price to fight him at $150-200 million, making the matchup almost impossible to make.
