Hughie Fury crowned British heavyweight champion after stopping Sam Sexton
Hughie Fury (21-1) produced an accomplished display to defeat British heavyweight champion Sam Sexton (24-4) in the fifth round.
The Stockport-born fighter – who is cousin of ex-world heavyweight champion Tyson – controlled proceedings from the first round in his first fight back since his sole career defeat to Joseph Parker last September for the WBO World heavyweight title, which the Kiwi has since conceded to Anthony Joshua in his following fight.
The 23-year-old challenger came out using the jab and superior speed and dropped Sexton, 33 from Norfolk, twice in the fourth and fifth rounds. The fourth round produced the first bit of drama as Sexton came on strong looking to work his way into the fight and rough Fury up on the inside but a big right hand i the final minute decked him but the clcok ran out before any follow up could cause trouble.
The champion came out in the fifth looking like his head had cleared and again began to take the fight to Fury but another rocking counter-right downed Sexton again and the referee rightly waved off the contest with no arguments from the vanquished.
Sexton had been riding a nine-fight winning streak, since losing to an undefeated David Price back in May 2012, but has now conceded the Lonsdale belt in the first defence to new champion Hughie Fury.
