Zelfa Barrett reveals the moment he decided to end the fight with Jordan Gill
Jordan Gill and Zelfa Barrett collided in a high-stakes domestic showdown at Manchester’s AO Arena at the weekend in the headline match on Eddie Hearn’s latest Matchroom event in the super-featherweight division.
Ultimately, it was the local hero Barrett who emerged victorious, unleashing two powerful left hooks to Gill’s body in the 10th round, prompting the referee to step in to end the bout.
The contest kicked off with in-form Gill asserting his dominance in the centre, while Barrett strategically worked from the outside, setting the stage for an engaging battle from the outset.
The second and third rounds witnessed an intriguing exchange, Barrett showcased his prowess in the fourth round, and the pace remained intense from there with Gill rallying in the next few rounds before the stoppage came in the 10th.
Barrett spoke to Boxing Social soon after the win, “It was good. I wouldn’t say I switched off, but I just thought that I was winning. Pat was like that to me and I said ‘am I winning?’ and he said it was close.
“I thought ‘hey we’re not doing this again. Marcus said finish to the body so I thought I’m logging out of there. I held my feet and I thought I’m not doing that again going into round 10 and it being close.”
He was then a bit critical of his own performance despite the conclusive victory, “I could have jabbed more, there were a lot more things I could have done, but the hit and moving was working. I praise Marcus again, he said don’t give this guy confidence, keep hitting him with the jabs. He got into a rhythm, but he didn’t hurt me.”
Gill now has to decide where he goes next while Barrett will be hunting down bigger titles.
