“Alexander the Great” weighs in on Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk
Former British, European and World super-welterweight champion, Wayne Alexander, gave his opinion on tonight’s historic undisputed heavyweight showdown in Saudi Arabia between WBC king Tyson Fury and unified titleholder Oleksandr Usyk.
Wayne Alexander lifted British, Commonwealth and World titles during his glittering boxing career between 1995-2006, thrilling fans with his exciting style and powerful hands that saw him KO opponents with single shots, ending his record at 24-3 with 18 knockouts, which equated to a 75% KO ratio.
Speaking exclusively to BBN, the 50-year-old Londoner begun by sharing his delight at this historic moment in boxing taking place after two false starts, “It’s very good to see this massive fight and sporting event finally happening, the boxing fans need it.”
Originally planned for December last year, the fight date was pushed back to February 17, but just weeks before Tyson Fury suffered from a cut sustained in sparring, delaying the bout a further three months to May 18.
Wayne continued, “I’ve been sitting on the fence, going back and forth, predicting a way that both fighters could win since this fight was first made.
“Tyson Fury should be the odds-on favourite – and I want him to win.
“Some say that a good big’un should beat a good littlun, and he has also been the most dominant at the weight over the years, but Usyk is probably the hungriest fighter and best technical boxer since Wladimir Klitschko that he has faced.
“I believe that the best version of Tyson Fury, with his extra height reach and weight, should beat the best version of Oleksandr Usyk, but I also believe Tyson has seen better days, especially judging by his last performance against Francis Ngannou.”
In October 2023, an ill-prepared Fury struggled with former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in his professional boxing debut, even getting dropped to the canvas in the third round. Fury was slightly fortunate to scrape by with a unanimous decision win, despite some fans believing he deserved a loss.
Ahead of tonight’s clash in Riyadh, “The Gypsy King” appears to be in tip-top shape, weighing in at his lightest in almost five years.
Wayne concluded with his fight prediction, “Some say that you’re only as good as your last fight, so unless he can turn back the clock to the Tyson that fought Wilder, then Oleksandr Usyk using his timing, good footwork and skills could win by a close points decision in what may not be such a great fight to watch and more of a chess match.
“A draw would not surprise me either.”
