Dillian Whyte is expecting to fight again in September
World title contender Dillian Whyte (30-3, 20KO) had his first fight in 16 months last March, defeating Christian Hammer after three rounds.
The year-plus hiatus was due to failing a drugs test ahead of his rematch with Anthony Joshua, which the Brixton boxer fought against and managed to overturn after legally proving his innocence.
Now, the Jamaican-born heavyweight is aiming for another fight in just a couple of months time, he confirmed at last weekend’s fight at the Copper Box Arena in London, featuring Fisher vs Babic.
Speaking to IFL TV, 36-year-old Whyte revealed, “I’m training and staying busy, just waiting on some news now, regarding [next] fight.
“I’m trying to fight another two, three times this year, so yeah I’m excited man.
“I’m hoping to fight in September.”
‘The Nordic Nightmare’ Robert Helenius replaced ‘The Body Snatcher’ in that August 2023 fight and was knocked out in sensational fashion by Anthony Joshua, who has gone on to KO his next two opponents – Otto Wallin and Francis Ngannou – in lucrative fights in Saudi Arabia.
Now, AJ will fight IBF World heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois for a shot at becoming a triple champion, while Dubois has only been able to fight once during the same timeframe.
He continued, “I’m trying to get back in the mix. I’ve got to climb the ladder all over again. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again, but secure a couple of more fights then hopefully a big fight at the end of this year-early next year.
“But I want to be busy, I want to fight three or four times a year; I don’t want to just fight one, two times, like I was doing before, you know.”
Discussing his failed fight with AJ, the Londoner is optimistic it could still happen in the near future.
“I want to fight Joshua and he says he still wants to fight me, so let’s see, you know. Heavyweight boxing, you’re [only ever] one or two fights away from being right back in the picture, so let’s see. If I have another two good performances then you never know.”
