WBC back Anthony Joshua to face Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk winner
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman backs a showdown between the winner of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua for the undisputed heavyweight crown.
The win puts him in prime position to challenge for all of the jewellery, with Sulaiman saying that he will not stand in the Brit’s way.
Speaking with Sky Sports, he said: “The WBC was presented a sanction request which was to fight for the undisputed.
“The WBC accepted that sanctioning and we accepted the rematch they have requested.
“But, if it is not anything to do with contractual or promotion, we would absolutely accept the winner to fight Joshua.
“So we have completely freed the ground for the undisputed, for a rematch, and for another fight of that level.
“The WBC position right now is very open to support the undisputed champion taking on the fights that the fans want to see.”
The green and gold belt is one of four world titles on the line when Fury and Usyk step into the ring in Riyadh on May 18.
While Sulaiman says that he will accept an undisputed clash involving Joshua – despite whispers of a rematch clause in Fury and Usyk’s contract – there are three other sanctioning bodies who could potentially spoil the party.
As the IBF mandatory challenger, Filip Hrgovic has been waiting patiently for his shot at the world title.
As well, with Joseph Parker outpointing Zhilei Zhang on the undercard of Joshua vs Ngannou, the New Zealander – holding the WBO interim belt – has just thrown his name into the mix, awaiting his shot at becoming a two-time world champion.
So, while the WBC’s stance seems relatively firm, there is still a strong possibility that the belts will become fragmented, unless the remaining sanctioning bodies follow suit.
