Ryan Garcia all set to challenge WBC World super-lightweight champion Devin Haney
The fragile state of Ryan Garcia’s mental health has been a huge talking point ahead of his fight with WBC titlist Devin Haney and now it has been addressed by the WBC President.
25-year-old Garcia has behaved erratically at times during the build-up and promotion of this fight.
He has shared a number of worrying videos in which he claimed to have his phone removed and access to his bank denied. He has arrived at conferences on a horse, has admitted to smoking weed and drinking, and has hurled all sorts of abuse and accusations at his rival Haney.
He has also ranted over ticket prices, the location of the fight in Brooklyn, as well as much more besides including threats during media workouts.
Speaking to Boxing Social, WBC leader Mauricio Sulaiman was asked about Garcia’s questionable state of mind.
“Well, at the beginning there are a couple of postings that were scary. I’ve spoken to him. He’s doing great, he’s training great. Social media has very powerful impact for the good and for the bad. Let’s just concentrate on what happens, I think it’s going to be a great fight.”
Garcia will need to focus and be in fine form when the fight comes around.
He is yet to win a world title, having come up short against Gervonta Davis in April last year, while Haney is a former undisputed lightweight champion turned super-lightweight belt holder who has rarely been troubled on his way to such success so early in his career and has made a bet with Garcia to that effect.
