Frank Warren wants a world title shot for Hamzah Sheeraz
Sheeraz well and truly announced himself on the world stage last Saturday night with a blistering first-round KO victory over world title contender Liam Williams.
Sheeraz was tasked with his biggest test to date with the tough Welshman, with Williams’s accolades stacking up as a two-weight British champion, and a world title challenger.
Although Sheeraz was the bookie’s favourite, no one expected him to dispatch Williams in the fashion that he did.
Now being discussed as one of the hottest commodities in UK boxing, Sheeraz’s promoter Warren has called for him to step up to world level and has named the man he wants to see the towering middleweight in with next.
“So where do we go from here? Well, Hamzah will now get ready for Ramadan, which gives us a window to plot his next move and, as I commented on Saturday, he is off the leash now.
“There are some good options out there, but some of those might not be so keen now. Personally, I wouldn’t have any hesitation over matching Hamzah with Janibek Alimkhanuly, the Kazakh southpaw, who holds two world title belts. He says nobody wants to fight him, so we have now got someone for him, if he is up for it.”
Janibek holds both the IBF and WBO middleweight belts, and within his 15-fight undefeated career he has already defeated two Brits in Denzel Bentley and Danny Dignum, but Sheeraz could be the man to break that unlucky record.
