Irish super-welterweight talent has left Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing
An up-and-coming, undefeated fighter has revealed that he has now parted ways with Eddie Hearn and is no longer fighting under his Matchroom promotion outfit.
Caoimhin ‘Black Thunder’ Agyarko (14-0, 7KO) hails from Belfast and, last time out, secured a solid victory over the marauding Troy Williamson in December 2023.
The fight took place at the SSE Arena in Belfast and saw him claim the vacant WBA super-welterweight title by way of a split decision.
Speaking to Seconds Out, 27-year-old Agyarko was asked if he had been offered any dates this year following his last win.
“No I haven’t unfortunately, it was a bit of a strange one. I went into that fight, obviously, I was signed with Matchroom, but now I’m a free agent. I went into that fight and Eddie Hearn said I needed to step up with a big fight and I went and beat Troy and that was my last fight with Matchroom.
“Everything went quiet and I heard nothing more from it. But that’s boxing at times, I understand the game. I’m in the gym in Liverpool just staying ready for another opportunity.”
Agyarko first joined Matchroom in October 2021, but hasn’t progressed in the way he had hoped for, despite winning seven 10-rounders.
He was asked how frustrating it is to get a big win like he did against a former British champion like Williamson then get no fresh offers off the back of it.
“It’s very frustrating. I want to push on, kick on, I want big fights and I want to progress my career. Every time I get myself into decent ranks something pushes me back and it’s like restarting all over again.”
On BoxRec, Caoimhin is ranked below 23-year-old youngster Callum Walsh (10-0, 8KO), who has only been a pro for little over two years, starting over three years later than Agyarko, who debuted in 2018.
He then stated his dreams for the future, “I want to go back to Belfast and headline on big fights because I’ve got a lot of fans.”
Leeds-based Ishmael Davis has been discussed as a next possible opponent for Agyarko, though the Belfast boxer says he is aiming higher.
