Tyson Fury resumes mind games with rival Oleksandr Usyk
While he rests up and allows his cut to heal, Tyson Fury has taken a moment out to continue his war of words with soon-to-be opponent Oleksandr Usyk by declaring himself the ‘king of boxing.’
That cut was inflicted on him by a Croatian sparring partner very late in camp on February 2nd, just two weeks before the WBC and lineal heavyweight champion was supposed to take on WBA, WBO and IBF belt holder Usyk in a historic undisputed showdown that was to be the first such contest in 25 years.
The new date has now been locked in for May 18 but many on-lookers have been worried about what the cut might mean for Fury who has failed to honour delayed rematches in the past with Wladimir Klitschko.
His own father has been involved in a war of words with Carl Froch who has questioned Fury’s CV, and the two heavyweight champions’ teams have also gone back and forth over the injury and subsequent delay.
In a post on Instagram, Fury himself has now fired another barb at Usyk, firstly correcting what the Ukrainian said and then promising to show him what he truly meant when the pair meet in the ring.
“No I don’t claim to be king of kings, that’s Jesus Christ. I claim to be the king of boxing, and I am. You will find out on May 18 you gap teeth rabbit!”
As those in boxing continue to question whether the fight itself will ever happen, Fury has confirmed he has no plans to retire and has his next five fights already in mind.
