Trio of British-based boxers qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics
On Monday, a trio of British boxers were competing in qualification bouts for the 2024 Olympics in Paris and all three of them came out with victories to ensure their place in the competition in the French capital this summer.
Pat Brown (92kgs) and Chantelle Reid (75kgs) are two of them, while Cindy Ngamba (75kgs) also won having trained with Team GB although she will represent the Fair Chance refugee team internationally.
Ngamba managed to halt Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova in the third round and was extremely pleased with the result according to Sky Sports.
“We are many, many steps away from the gold medal but I am emotional, thank god. I thank everybody in GB boxing, all the coaches. Mostly, I thank god. I am speechless, I don’t have any words, but when I say I am speechless I mean I am over the moon.””
As well as that, Brown got a unanimous points win over Polish fighter Mateusz Bereznicki and Reid got the same result over Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova.
Brown: “Words can’t describe… I could cry my eyes out. I can’t wait to show my dad, he’s who I’ve done this for. I have only been on the programme for a couple of years, it was quite far out of reach, but I have always believed in myself and I can’t believe I am going. It is unbelievable.”
These latest qualifiers join those who have already got their ticket to the games including Delicious Orie, Charley Davison and Rosie Eccles, all of whom are now proud GB Boxing Olympians.
This summer there is one last world qualification event on the horizon which GB can still enter boxers for in weights that don’t already feature any qualified athletes.
In the last Olympics, Tokyo 2020, Team GB came away with a record six medallists.
