Teofimo Lopez vs Jamaine Ortiz full fight results
Teofimo Lopez (19-1, KO) successfully defended his WBO and Ring super-lightweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Jamaine Ortiz (17-2-1, KO) with scores of 117-111 and 115-113 twice.
Teofimo Lopez begun the fight on his jab, taking the front foot, as challenger Jamaine Ortiz adopted a southpaw stance.
“The Showman” was constantly coming forward, cutting off the ring, throwing single shots – jabs and big right hands – while “The Technician” was content to back up, skip laterally, waiting for an opportunity to counter a mistake.
Teo was able to land a big combination in the second; then, in the third, it was Ortiz who was able to turn the champion mid-attack and land a big uppercut on the inside, which the New Yorker shook off and smiled.
Instructions from the corner for Lopez, after Ortiz had such a good third round, was to target the body to slow him down, move his head more, and start putting combinations together, nothing of note really landing.
In the fourth, Teo landed a a good one-two with a backhand right to the body, followed by a left hook up top, then he invited Ortiz to the corner where they traded furiously for a moment.
Ortiz spent the fight perpetually moving, keeping the distance between them, never allowing Lopez to get close enough to put punches together, and frustrated the champ.
By round six, Lopez had landed only 21 punches to Ortiz’s 26. The 28-year-old Massachusetts man was just to mobile for the Brooklyn boxer. Lopez was hitting thin air very often, he just couldn’t catch the spritely southpaw.
In the seventh, they clash heads with Ortiz coming off worse as a cut opens up above his left eye, blood trickling down his cheek. Then a right hand seems to affect the impeded Ortiz, who then gets caught with an uppercut much to the crowd’s delight. Lopez landed double digit punches for the first time in the fight.
Lopez slips to the canvas in the ninth as he lunged in with a missed left uppercut, Ortiz easily sidestepping the attack to his left.
The theme of the fight is Ortiz circling the ring, while Lopez hunts him down, ineffectively, with neither man really landing much at all. Ortiz is technically brilliant, elusive and intelligent, but lacking any offense that could win him the rounds, let alone the contest. Lopez is on the front foot, constantly walking his man down with very little results.
As the final bell rung, it was difficult to decide, especially as the challenger outlanded the champion by 80 punches to 78.
However, Lopez was the aggressor from round one to 12 and Ortiz couldn’t offer enough offensively to take many of the 12 rounds on the judges’ scorecards.
Lopez displayed his frustrations post-fight, even swearing at the crowd as they booed his performance, but directed his anger towards his negative foe, “We cannot for one second claim these people, these fighters, that don’t want to come and fight. If you ain’t ready for this life, get the f**k out of my sport!”
Outspoken rival, Terence Crawford, reacted to the result, directing his expletive video clip towards Teofimo, “If we was to fight right now, on the streets, I would break your f***ing neck, and that’s on my kids.
“And you know it, I know it, and the whole world know it.”
