Teddy Atlas gives prediction for Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia
Esteemed boxing coach and pundit Teddy Atlas offers some advice to Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) ahead of his all-Mexican super middleweight clash with Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs).
Undisputed champion Canelo will put his four titles on the line when he faces Munguia on May 6 – Cinco de Mayo weekend – at the T-Mobile arena, Las Vegas.
The all-Mexican showdown will headline PBC’s second pay-per-view card on Amazon Prime and, appreciating the difficulty of Munguia’s next assignment, Atlas shares his thoughts on what, in his view, the 27-year-old should do.
On ProBox TV, he said: “The key is to make those adjustments. I wouldn’t even call them adjustments – to make those changes in the gym.
“That’s the thing, I mean, you can make adjustments in the corner, but if you haven’t been taught the core things, the most important things, the things that could be detrimental to your fighter – defence for Munguia – if that hasn’t been improved on, if that hasn’t been set in stone in the gym, you know what, you ain’t making no adjustment.
“What are you going to say: ‘move your head?’ You should’ve said that already. What are you going to say: ‘slip the right hand?’ That had to be taught. If that hadn’t been taught already then it’s too late.”
Former world middleweight champion Munguia began his campaign up at 168 lbs earlier last year when he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko over 12 rounds.
He comes off a dominant performance over John Ryder, sending the Brit into retirement following a punishing ninth-round stoppage.
Now, Munguia takes on his toughest opponent yet who, up until recent years, was widely considered as the pound-for-pound number one.
Canelo comes off a comfortable unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo, with fans hoping that, should be get past Munguia, there could be a potential matchup with David Benavidez.
