After a challenging bout with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, Sunny Edwards has taken some time to reflect on the landscape of boxing and aimed Sky Sports matchmaking as the “easy graft” approach
In December, Edwards was dethroned as IBF Flyweight champion by Rodriguez in Arizona, as he was dismantled and ultimately knocked down in the ninth round, and pulled out by his corner following a courageous display during the unification bout.
Despite surviving the intense encounter with an injury over his right eye and a nearly closed left eye, Edwards’ corner wisely stopped the fight, leading to Rodriguez unifying the WBO and IBF flyweight titles.
In a recent interview with Boxing Social, Edwards shifted the spotlight to other fighters, specifically discussing the match between Ishmael Davies and Troy Williamson. He acknowledged their gratitude towards Matchroom for providing them with opportunities, emphasizing that the winner would progress to another significant bout.
Edwards then delved into the importance of top-tier fighters facing each other, taking a subtle jab at boxers on Sky Sports whom he believes take an easier route.
He advocated for a system where fighters engage in challenging matches, emphasising that this approach would lead to familiar and compelling storylines over the next five years.
In a final pointed remark, he suggested that those seeking “easy graft” should head to Sky, insinuating a disparity in the level of competition.
“And it needs to be [this way] ’cause then at least in five years if all the fighters do that, take a fight, win, take another fight, at least the storylines will be familiar. All the fighters who want easy fights need not apply. If you want easy graft, go to Sky.”
