Sunny Edwards chasing fight with Nonito Donaire
Former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards has called out boxing legend Nonito Donaire by saying: “I want the chance to share the ring with you.”
This rather unforeseen call out happened over the weekend and came after Sivenathi Nontshinga got a superb revenge win over Adrian Curiel in Mexico which prompted Edwards, who recently lost his own world title to Bam Rodriguez, to post a message on X:
“Great stoppage by Nontshinga. Weathered the storm and took his man out of there. I want two time too @EddieHearn.”
However, the first contender in the list for a go at Nontshinga’s IBF title is Filipino Cristian Araneta so Edwards is very much asking to jump the queue to get a shot. When this was put to him, the former champion joked that he deserves it “Cos I got an IBF ring.”
It was then Donaire’s wife who waded in to say, “Respectfully, that ring doesn’t give you Lord of the Rings powers or anything”, at which point the man himself posted to say, “Ima tell u respectfully back off. She is defending the Philippine boxer who has worked his way to earn the spot in 108lbs. Araneta is a hard working kid that shouldn’t be taken advantage of or shoved around just bc of politics.”
After more back and forth, Donaire then tagged in Edwards’ promoter Eddie Hearn.
“By all means if @SunnyEdwards wants to ask @EddieHearn to move up to 118 to fight me I’ll wait for the contract.”
Edwards was keen.
“I would forget every ambition of fighting anyone else right now for a chance to share the ring with you. I can make 118.”
Nonito Donaire was last in action in July 2023, where he lost a close fight with Alexandre “Peque” Santiago at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Both former world champions have lost their last bouts and looking to bounce back. It seems the ball is now in Hearn’s court for this unlikely but enticing matchup.
