Spencer Oliver has come down hard on the news that Jake Paul is to fight Mike Tyson and said ‘he lives a terrible life
After a long retirement, Tyson, now 58, briefly returned to the ring for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. On the undercard was Jake Paul, then a fledgling YouTuber testing his boxing skills for the first time.
Years later, Paul has become a prominent figure in the sport, despite mixed opinions about his record. He’s faced opponents like KSI, Joe Fournier, and Tommy Fury, bringing fresh if not always welcome attention to boxing. Additionally, he’s championed fair pay for fighters and promoted female boxer Amanda Serrano.
Former boxer turned pundit Spencer Oliver has spoken to Boxing Social about this surprise match-up and had some strong words.
“One word mate. Sad. He’s an icon. We’ve got generations of kids walking around with Mike Tyson t-shirts on. He’s put his name up there with Muhammad Ali. Icons.
“Do we want to see a 57-year-old man who lives a terrible life and smokes weed like we don’t know what, he’s got his cannabis farm, we’ve recently seen him on crutches, the guys in a sad spot.
“I don’t want to see him back in the ring fighting a young YouTuber who wants to make a name for himself and fight a modern-day legend. I understand it from a financial point of view but I don’t want to see it.”
