Shakur Stevenson blames Haney’s defeat to Garcia on bad tactics
Ryan Garcia turned the boxing world upside down on Saturday evening, dropping WBC super lightweight champion, Devin Haney, three times en route to an emphatic win in New York.
Garcia was the heavy underdog going into the fight, however, looked the more polished of the two inside the ring. Setting up his shots well, and eventually forcing multiple devastating left hooks to find a home on ‘The Dream’s’ chin
Shakur Stevenson has been a long-time critic of Haney, calling the former undefeated star out on multiple occasions. However, in an interview with Cigar Talk, the 26-year-old revealed he was rooting for Haney throughout the bout.
“I’m not praying for nobody’s downfall I’m not that type of guy. Honestly speaking, when that s**t was going on, I was cheering at the screen, more so on Devin’s side. Just because I had more of a closer relationship with him once upon a time. I don’t got that in me, that ain’t really me.”
Stevenson also delved into what he believes are the fundamental errors made by Haney on the night.
“It should have been; let’s box and move, let’s beat this mother**ker with this beautiful jab that we got. We got a beautiful mother**king jab, and this is what works. Let’s make him look for us. Make him find me, confuse him. I feel like, last night, It just felt like Ryan was more so the boxer.
“Stick and move, use our legs and stuff. Nowadays they call us boring for doing that, but I feel like he got caught up in that.
“He got caught up in a moment where it’s like, I wanna please the fans. But the same fans that you sitting there tryna please, at the end of the day, is the same f**king people that are sitting there trying to s**t on him.
“They should be respecting him for something that they said they wanted him to do.”
Haney appears keen to get a rematch agreed, however, it appears unlikely it will take place at 140 lbs after ‘King Ry’ revealed he is planning to move up in weight class.
