Shakur Stevenson called out by undefeated countryman
Floyd Schofield Jr throws down gauntlet down to set up an unexpected showdown with Shakur Stevenson at the end of the year, with Keyshawn Davis sidelined.
The young American prospect took to social media and said: “Shakur, you say no one will fight you. I challenge you to a fight at the end of the year.”
While his bravery is commendable, Schofield Jr (16-0, 12 KOs) has not competed at anywhere near the level of Stevenson.
Instead, the 21-year-old is plying his trade against lower level opposition, but still revels in the idea of testing himself against a three-weight world champion.
Triple champion Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) called retirement on his career at just 26 years old, after an underwhelming performance against Edwin De Los Santos towards the backend of last year.
However, most of the boxing fraternity have called his bluff, with the WBC world lightweight champion still estimated by many to reach the pinnacle of the sport and, in turn, go down in history as one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of gloves.
It would seem that Schofield Jr, then, has joined Stevenson in pulling a publicity stunt on social media to catapult his name into the conversations pertaining to the lightweight division.
A more realistic proposition, though, would be Davis (10-0, 7 KOs) who, while campaigning up at super lightweight – coming off the back of a coming-of-age performance against Jose Pedraza – could be on a collision course with Schofield Jr, as the pair have already engaged in a war of words on social media.
