Sam Jones secured Josh Taylor a bigger purse for highly-anticipated rematch: “I did get Josh Taylor more money and he knows that as well”
Jack Catterall’s manager, Sam Jones, has revealed he secured rival Josh Taylor a larger purse ahead of the grudge match between the super lightweight rivals, originally making the claim at their recent press conference.
Taylor defeated Jack Catterall in a controversial defence of his undisputed super-lightweight titles back in 2022, a fight which many still believe the Englishman won and was boxing’s latest victim of home judging.
Now the pair are finally set to meet again, but with no title on the line, and during a fiery presser, it was Sam Jones who seemed to rile up ‘The Tartan Tornado’ and his loyal fans, rather than the Chorley-born Catterall, adding that Taylor should be thanking him for earning him more money during the negotiations of the rematch.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Jones dived deeper into his statement, unveiling that Matchroom encouraged him to shop around for a better deal than their initial offer for the fight, then when he found one, they decided to match it.
“Our relationship is good with Frank Smith and Eddie [Hearn], they said that if it is worth more than they are offering, then go and shop around.
“To his credit, Ben Shalom [of BOXXER and Sky Sports] was involved in the first fight and he wanted to do the fight. It was all agreed relatively quickly, Ben did it very well, it was all done.
“Then Matchroom came at the final hour and said ‘we can see how big this fight is, we are matching it’, and it got done. All that ended up happening was Josh [Taylor] got more dough and we got the figure that we originally asked for three months ago.
“So I did get Josh Taylor more money and he knows that as well, that is why he secretly loves me.”
Taylor-Catterall II will take place at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on April 27th, live on DAZN.
