Is Ryan Garcia lining up another grudge match?
Ryan Garcia catapulted himself into the upper echelons of the boxing world, after claiming a shock upset victory over Devin Haney on April 20th in New York.
Despite being hurt in the opening round, ‘The Dream’ Haney was up on the scorecards heading into the seventh round when things suddenly turned sour for the WBC super-lightweight champion.
‘KingRy’ dropped the champion with a thunderous left hook, before following up with two added knockdowns in the 10th and 11th rounds, securing a majority decision win.
Like the rest of the boxing world, Haney knew all about Garcia’s devastating left hand. Unfortunately for the former undefeated fighter, he was unable to stay away from the trademark hook, ultimately seeing the momentum quickly swiped away from him.
25-year-old Garcia is without the WBC strap after coming in 3lbs over the weight limit, though he seems ready to move on from his rivalry with ‘The Dream’, appearing keen to line up another heated exchange.
Errol Spence Jr. is currently in a legal battle with his former trainer, Derrick James, after the trainer filed a lawsuit suing the undefeated star for fraud and breach of contract.James wants “no less than $5 million” from the former welterweight champion, claiming he was never paid the agreed 10% after ‘The Truth’s’ stoppage loss to Terrence Crawford in July 2023.
Speaking out on the matter, Garcia called out Spence, attempting to have the welterweight go 0-2 against the 25-year-old’s team.
“Yeah Spence got beat from my coach, what’s good, come see me. You wanna sue him? I wanna beat you up.”
The move makes sense for Garcia after he revealed he no longer wishes to fight at 140lbs, claiming it is “impossible” for him to make the weight limit anymore.
A matchup against ‘KingRy’ could be just what Spence needs to revitalise his career. The 34-year-old was supposedly locked into a rematch clause with Crawford, however, frustratingly no further progress has been made.
