Ryan Garcia bet claim questioned by former world title challenger
Ryan Garcia claimed to have made plenty of money by betting on himself to win his recent world title fight but one retired former world title challenger isn’t buying it.
Garcia shocked the world when he beat Devin Haney back in mid-April. His erratic behaviour led many t believe he shouldn’t be in the ring at all and that he would pose no challenge to the unbeaten Haney. However, he knocked down the form undisputed lightweight king three times on his way to a fine pints win.
Now it has been suggested all that was a plan so that the odds on him to win would be large so that he could bet on himself and win big. Some of those potential winnings could have been used to pay back the money he lost from his purse for coming over 3lbs heavier than the agreed weight limit, while more claims have recently been made about Haney’s weight.
Speaking to Boxing Social, however, former super middleweight fighter Paul Smith said he wanted to see proof before he believed the rumours.
“I keep seeing that he bet $2 million on himself. Where’s the betting slip? If I bet $2 million to win anything you’d see my slip, I guarantee you. Mayweather bets $1 million to win 200 grand and he puts the slip up. If you did do that, where’s the proof? If he did, good on ya, it’s nothing to do with me, it’s no skin off my nose, I don’t mind, but you get too many gullible people.”
He was then asked about the antics in the lead up to the fight.
“I’ve never met him, so I couldn’t personally tell you about him. I don’t know that lad. Every time we’ve seen him recently he might have been putting an act on to be normal, we just don’t know. He deserves massive respect cause he has plenty of money in the bank and it’s hard to be motivated when you have that. Well done to him.”
