RJJ on Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: “You don’t gotta worry about Mike at all”
Love him or hate him, Jake Paul has become an influential figure in the boxing world in recent years.
The divisive influencer-turned-boxer has shared the ring with numerous well-known names. Though, whether they are not boxers by trade, or are known for other reasons more so than their boxing ability, there always seems to be an avenue for fight fans to throw shade at the 27-year-old.
‘The Problem Child’s’ most recent endeavour sees him preparing to share the ring with one of the most feared heavyweights in boxing history. July 20, will see Jake Paul clash with former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson in Texas.
With more details surrounding the fight being revealed, some unusual rules have led to confusion and debate amongst fans and pundits alike. The fight will be an exhibition bout, with rumours circulating surrounding larger 16-ounce gloves compared to the usual eight or ten.
It has been speculated as to whether this could be to preserve the former Heavyweight star’s health, being much older than his counterpart at 58 years old. However, fellow 90s legend Roy Jones Jr. has stated that this will not be the reason for the rule changes.
“You’re not gonna see Mike get hurt against Jake Paul when they put on 16-ounce gloves and headgear. They didn’t put that on to protect Mike, they put that on to protect Jake, you don’t gotta worry about Mike getting hurt at all,” Jones revealed in an interview with TalkSPORT.
Jones seems to be hedging his bets on Tyson to come out as the victor, while there will be no official winner announced after the bout. There will almost definitely be a people’s champion.
“In this Jake Paul situation, I don’t think Jake Paul is good enough to hurt Mike. He may be powerful enough if they had on eight-ounce gloves or ten-ounce gloves. But also if they had on ten-ounce gloves Mike might hurt him. I think my chance would be to bet that Mike would hurt him, more so than he would hurt Mike.
“I think the 16-ounce gloves and the headgear are not there to protect the legend, Mike Tyson, they’re there to protect the young kid who knows not what he does by stepping in the ring with Mike Tyson.”
