Highly-anticipated world title rematch in the works
BOXXER has revealed that a highly anticipated rematch between Natasha Jonas and Mikaela Mayer could be in the works for later this year, according to The Ring.
The pair’s first encounter took place last January at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, with Jonas retaining her IBF world welterweight title following an enthralling 10-round clash.
Her promoter, BOXXER, looks to stage a second showdown on June 15, which is set to take place in the UK on Sky Sports.
Since losing to Jonas via a narrow split-decision, Mayer has set her sights on three potential bouts before the end of 2024, with two next opponents in mind.
After her previous title fight – when she defeated Lucy Wildheart back in 2023 – the 33-year-old jumped up two weight divisions to face Miss GB.
Believing that she had done enough to secure the win, the American has expressed an interest in avenging her second loss as a professional with an even bigger rematch in the UK.
Another name has been thrown into the mix as well, with recently crowned WBO champion Sandy Ryan being mentioned as a possible option for Mayer.
Ryan comes off a dominant fourth-round stoppage win over former world champion Terri Harper, which took place last March at the Sheffield Arena.
But, with the 30-year-old fighting on DAZN, it is unclear whether a deal could be reached between Top Rank, who represent Mayer, and Matchroom.
Regardless, it is highly likely that Mayer will be given another shot at a world title later this year.
Elsewhere in the 147 lbs division, Olympic gold medallist Lauren Price will take on Jessica McCaskill for the WBA strap in Cardiff on May 11.
With the fight headlining a show on Sky Sports, the champion could steer themselves towards a unification with the winner of the Jonas vs Mayer rematch, but only if the pair collide in June.
