Peter Fury is pleased with son Hughie’s latest result: “It was a solid comeback against a decent fighter”
Trainer Peter Fury has offered his reaction to seeing his son Hughie get back to winning ways after almost three years out of the ring.
World title contender Hughie Fury made his comeback at a GBM Sports event in Rotherham this past weekend, April 20.
Hughie, cousin of WBC world champion Tyson Fury, faced Ukrainian journeyman Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko and picked up a unanimous points victory over six rounds.
Despite setbacks from a skin condition and a battle with COVID-19, the 29-year-old from Manchester showcased his skills, blew off the cobwebs, and focused on rebuilding his fitness after his extended hiatus from the sport.
Speaking to Boxing Social, father and trainer Peter gave an honest assessment of the fight, “I was happy with it. It went exactly as I thought it would go. He’s a tough guy, he’s durable, he’s a better than what he looks. He comes and delivers the pressure.“If you try and knock that guy out you’re gonna’ get stopped, he’s one of them. Listen, he’s a good, decent domestic fighter, he comes to win, he’s tough, he takes shots to give them back.
“Hughie got the six rounds out, and he had to dig deep; when I say dig deep, the guy was hitting back, he had to think in there, it was a good competitive six rounds with a guy that is not a fall-over, not a given.”
He then had further praise for the way his son Hughie dealt with a credible opponent after so long away, “When you’re three years out and you’ve got a guy this fit, off three fights back to back, he’s just done a 10 rounder, he’s a potential banana skin for someone who has been out three years, he had to pace it, had to think in there, he got the rounds done.
“When you think nervous energy, getting back in the ring, your mind plays funny things when you’ve been out three years, taking all that into account it was a solid comeback against a decent fighter.”
Now back in the fold, the former world title contender is eager to stay active and waste no time in returning to contention.
There are already plans for Fury potentially appearing on the Price-McCaskill card in Wales next month.
