Peter Fury takes his hat off to Ryan Garcia
Peter Fury has given his reaction to Ryan Garcia’s ‘clever’ victory over Devin Haney this past weekend.
Against all odds, the underdog emerged victorious against former undisputed lightweight champion, Haney, who was known for his impeccable record and unwavering professionalism in and outside the ring.
In stark contrast, Garcia had been on a tumultuous journey in the months leading up to the grudge match. His pre-fight antics included taunting his opponent, stirring up spectators, and admitting to indulging in smoking and drinking during training camp, among many other controversies, culminating in turning up 3.2lbs over the weight limit and drinking beer on the scales.
However, the 25-year-old Californian set aside all distractions to deliver the performance of his career against a formidable undefeated champion.
He managed to knock down his opponent three times and secured a points victory by the end of the 12th round. Not only that, he managed to turn the 3-3 rivalry between them to 4-3 in his favour.
Speaking to Boxing Social, Peter Fury – who saw his son Hughie secure victory in his first fight for three years on the same weekend – gave his enthusiastic assessment of the fight.
“Good tactics. He blagged everybody and got it right. He got the result. He played a clever move. The way he was going on in the interview and the build-ups, you’ve got to take your hat off to him. He did a good job. He’s a good talent is Garcia, I like him, he’s a fabulous young fighter.”
He was then asked whether he knew the antics were a prank all along or whether Garcia really did have issues.
“I had my suspicions about it, but he passed all his medicals. If he wasn’t well he wouldn’t be let in there. They’ve got some good commissions over in America. He done well, he fooled a lot of people, so good for him.”
Since the fight, Garcia has called out the likes of Sebastian Fundora and Conor Benn.
