Oscar De La Hoya continues Canelo conflict with current quip
Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya expressed his ill feelings towards Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), bad-mouthing the Mexican during the fight week for Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia.
The Mexican pair have been at loggerheads ever since the undisputed super middleweight champion left Golden Boy Promotions after his light heavyweight title fight against Sergey Kovalev back in 2019.
Now, it seems that the bitterness between them is still just as palpable, with Golden Boy boss De La Hoya not holding back with his continuous comments.
Speaking via Boxing Social, he said: “As a fighter, I always talk-up fighters in the ring. Now, outside the ring, it’s a whole different story.
“Everybody talks about me outside the ring – s*** that I did back in the past. It is what it is; it’s out in the open.
“Inside the ring, nobody can criticise me. That’s the respect that I deserve, but Canelo talking all this s*** – that’s all it is.
“The fact that he cant be around me because the attention is off him – that’s a big thing for him, it f***s with his head.
“I don’t understand it because he’s a great fighter. I respect him as a fighter but I don’t respect him as a person.”
After shattering his relationship with De la Hoya, Canelo kept fighting on DAZN but joined forces with British promoter Eddie Hearn, who managed his fights against the likes of Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders at 168lbs.
The 33-year-old then formed a new relationship with Al Haymon and PBC, who promoted his undisputed clash with Caleb Plant back in 2021.
His next fight on PBC, against Jaime Munguia, will headline a pay-per-view card on Amazon Prime Video on May 4.
Mexican superstar Canelo has given as good as he he’s got, firing shots back at Oscar by belittling his constant comments as ‘stupid’.
Meanwhile, De La Hoya focuses on his charge, Ryan Garcia, who takes on Devin Haney for the WBC world super lightweight title this Saturday night, April 20.
