Oleksandr Usyk arrested at Krakow airport today
Oleksandr Usyk has been arrested at Krakow airport in Poland today, September 16.
A video showing the two-weight undisputed champion has been circulated on social media showing him being led away in handcuffs by uniformed officials.
The Ukrainian was due to fly to London to watch this Saturday’s Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois IBF World heavyweight title fight. Usyk has already beaten both boxers, but the winner could be a potential future opponent next year.
Ukrainian politician Zhan Beleniuk said on social media: “Oleksandr Usyk was arrested at Krakow airport. The circumstances are being clarified.”
His wife, Kate, has reported that he’s ok and it’s not over criminal offences. She posted on her Instagram story: “Everything is ok, everything is fine!!! Alexander will explain everything later!!! nothing to be criminal … Good night to you all!!!”
Update: Usyk released from detention in Poland
The 37-year-old unbeaten southpaw has already begun training camp for his December 21 rematch with Tyson Fury, who he beat via split decision in May.
His career-best win over ‘The Gypsy King’ saw him crowned as the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years. He has already achieved the same incredible feat at cruiserweight.
Currently, he is regarded within the top 3 pound-for-pound fighters in the world, alongside fellow double undisputed champions, Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue.
