PBC loses a top contender from their stable
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) have lost a promising contender this week as news has emerged that a number one ranked super lightweight has left Al Hayman’s promotional outfit.
It is Chicago-born Kenneth Sims Jr. who has decided to go his own way, apparently on amicable terms having been with PBC since a first fight on the undercard of a show hosted on Christmas Day back in 2021.
Sims went on to have three fights with PBC, all of which were wins, after they first signed him following an upset points win over then-unbeaten Elvis Rodriguez back in May 2021 on the undercard of the Josh Taylor versus Jose Ramirez world title fight.
He remained rather inactive after that despite the success and most recently beat Batyr Akhmedov last May, but again progress has stalled since.
Speaking to The Ring about the news, Sims was upbeat.
“It will be a good thing for my career. I want the biggest fights and I want to stay active. Those go hand in hand. It was just time for a fresh start. I appreciate PBC for everything and thank them the platform they gave me, especially for that last fight. I just think the opportunity to move on was the best thing for me to do.”
“PBC gave me a chance when I didn’t know my next move. After the Elvis Rodriguez win, I really thought my career would take off. It didn’t quite work out that way.
“Then PBC gave me the opportunity, they got me to the Akhmedov fight. I appreciate them for that. They didn’t have to do that. At the time I was ranked number ten. There were others ranked ahead of me they could have given that fight to. They gave it to me and I took advantage of it. Unfortunately, I haven’t fought since then.”
Sims remains number one in the WBA rankings although has not yet been called as a mandatory challenger to the world titleholder, and still hopes to fight the winner of the Rolly Romero vs Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz fight on March 30.
