Floyd Mayweather’s manager reveals fight he believes is bigger for Canelo
CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, has stated his belief that the rumoured Canelo-Crawford showdown is not as exciting as many believe it to be, instead suggesting that the undisputed super-middleweight champion should go down an alternate route.
Triple champion Crawford staked his claim for the spot as pound-for-pound number one with a generational performance and knockout win over Errol Spence Jr back in July, becoming the undisputed welterweight champion in the process.
Ever since, ‘Bud’ has been linked to an unconventional three-weight jump up to the 168lb division to face Canelo, but Ellerbe told Fight Hype that the Mexican should instead pursue a showdown with David Benavidez, if he wants to maximise pay-per-view buys.
“I know the numbers, I know the business, no it [Terence Crawford fight] is not [bigger than one with David Benavidez].”
“It has nothing to do with whether somebody deserves the fight or whether they should fight, we just talking about the business. The Benavidez-Canelo fight and Crawford-Canelo, there is no comparison.”
“It has nothing to do with Terence Crawford, we are just talking about the business and Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the sport, he has proven that, but it has nothing to do with the business. You have got to know what that means. For example, Errol Spence and Terence Crawford, two tremendous fighters and everybody knows that Errol is my guy, but the biggest fight in boxing all along was Tank [Gervonta Davis] and Ryan [Garcia].”
“There [Spence=Crawford] fight was the most talked about fight within the last six or seven years, two young undefeated guys that are in their prime, there fight had been talked about for so long but the business said something else. That fight did half of what Tank’s fight did.”
Today, Canelo has announced that he will fight on May 4th in Las Vegas, with Jermall Charlo the frontrunner for his ‘Cinco De Mayo’ outing of 2024.
