Maxi Hughes reveals concerns over judges ahead of Zepeda clash
The former IBO lightweight champion, Maxi Hughes, is scheduled to face off against William Zepeda in an IBF and WBA 12-round eliminator on March 16. The event is slated to take place at The Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas.
The fight marks an opportunity for Hughes to catapult himself straight back to the top of the Lightweight rankings after the Englishman suffered a controversial mixed-decision defeat to George Kambosos Jr. in July, stripping him of his IBO title in the process.
Speaking to Boxing Social ahead of the bout, ‘Maximus’ appears well prepared, as we edge closer to the fateful March showdown.
“I do actually feel good, training’s gone really well, sparring really well today. Feeling good, fit and healthy. No injuries, luckily the kids have not given me any bugs or nowt like that yet so if they can just hold them off for a few more days till I’ve gone, that’s good.
“We are in a good place physically, mentally, ready.”
After a dubious loss to Kambosos in the summer, Maxi Hughes went on to express his concern over the potential judging situation in a few weeks time.
“We are in this position because the judges got it so wrong and it was that obvious that they got it so wrong last time the IBF have stepped in and, you know, done the right thing. So that’s why we’re here ‘cause they know I didn’t lose that fight.
“If we find out that it’s them judges that did one in Oklahoma I’ll have something to say, and I’ll be saying; ‘I’m not comfortable with this’. I don’t know if they had an agenda or what but they clearly didn’t like me for some reason.
“I’ll sort of leave that to my team. I’ll just get me head on what I’ve got to do and let that do all the talking.”
