Matty Harris joins Peter Fury as he bids to rebuild from a loss
British heavyweight prospect “Magic” Matty Harris (5-1, 4KO) is now training with Peter Fury, the coach who masterminded his nephew Tyson Fury’s unified world title victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
The 24-year-old from Leamington Spa gets back in the ring after eight months out on March 1 on the Wasserman Boxing show in Telford, topped by Sam Eggington and Abass Baraou, live on Channel 5.
The rising star faces Belgian Amine Boucetta in a comeback fight after his surprise defeat to journeyman Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko last July.
He revealed to SecondsOut that he is now being trained by Peter Fury, “I’ve known him when I first went up to spar [Tyson] Fury about four years ago, we got on really well, I was there with them for five months, I was boxing really well up there.
“So we always stayed in touch, the odd message here and there, then it must have been about October time and I gave him a call, then gone up for a chat and I asked him, and he said ‘Yeah, course’.
“We both know Peter’s not one to mince his words; if he thought I was trash then he wouldn’t have took me on to train me in the first place.”
Matty confirmed he is thriving under the change of leadership, “He 100 per cent pushes me everyday to work harder and be better. I’m back out on March 1st but I’m, by no means, a finished article of what I’ll become under Peter.
“He even said it himself, he says that even if I go out there and knock him out in the first round, he says ‘I still won’t be impressed’; we’ve still got a lot of work to do. It’s a very humbling environment and it’s pushing me to be the best version of me.”
Harris has sparred with the likes of Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, who fight each other on March 8 in Riyadh.
