Liam Smith weighing up his next fight options, which includes the likes of Conor Benn
Former world champion Liam Smith (33-4-1, 20KO) eyes a potential clash with Conor Benn, expressing a desire to secure the domestic dustup for his next fight.
The 35-year-old looks to reignite his career, having been out of the ring since his 10th-round stoppage defeat to Chris Eubank Jr back in September last year. In January 2023, ‘Beefy’ became the fist man to stop Eubank, when he caught him in the fourth round, but the Brighton boxer was able to even the score eight months on.
As a promotional free agent, the Liverpudlian now weighs up several options ahead of his ring return.
On IFL TV, he said: “Am I speaking to people? Yes. Have I got a few offers on the table? Yes. Have I picked one? No.
“I’m in a position where its gotta be a big fight. Frank and George Warren have offered me names, and Eddie [Hearn] and Frank [Smith] are in the middle of doing the same thing now.
“Conor [Benn] has been mentioned to me and, like I’ve always said, I’ll take the fight in a heartbeat. I’d love that fight next.”
If Smith chooses to align himself with Warren, a showdown with Benn could appear on a second edition of Matchroom and Queensbury’s 5v5 show.
The two promotional juggernauts have already pitted 10 fighters against each other for a stacked card on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, headlined by a mouthwatering matchup between Artur Beterbiev and Dmirty Bivol for the undisputed light-heavyweight crown.
Now, with both Hearn and Warren working together, Smith acknowledges that there could be another 5v5 card happening later this year, but wishes to dust off the cobwebs before a possible trip out to Saudi Arabia.
Despite winning a WBO world title down at super-welterweight back in 2015, Smith has opted to campaign at 160lbs more recently.
Benn, meanwhile, has also flirted with the idea of a fight up at middleweight, as the Brit has not made 147lbs since his contest with Eubank Jr was scuppered in 2022.
