Free man Leigh Wood reveals he is currently out of contract
World title holder Leigh Wood has revealed that he is not currently under contract with Matchroom Boxing despite fighting much of his career with Eddie Hearn’s promotional outfit.
Wood and Hearn have enjoyed some he nights together in recent years with Wood getting huge wins over Michael Conlan, Josh Warrington and Maurizio Lara – the last of which was a reverse of a knockout loss in their first fight.
The last time out was the Warrington fight back in October which saw Wood down on the cards after the first seven rounds only to pull out an impressive knockout to stop the fight there and then.
As of yet, that has not materialised and now, in response to some abuse from someone online, Wood has posted a message on X that reveals he is no longer with Matchroom as per a clause he put in his contract for his last fight.
“Hi Dan, thick Leigh here. I put it in the contract in case [the Warrington rematch] couldn’t be made to make myself a free agent. And Ben could literally train me to win the rematch via a zoom link. Like I said in the last build-up he’s as predictable as the 44 bus.”
He then reiterated the point outright, “I started with Matchroom I’d like to finish with them too. But not currently in a contract.”
It’s not uncommon for promoters and boxers to do deals on a fight-by-fight basis but this news means that ‘Leigh-thal’ is theoretically free to fight anyone on any platform.
