Errol Spence Jr. is highly sought after following split from Derrick James
Errol Spence Jnr has been out of the ring since a loss last summer but a legendary trainer has now said he is ready to step in and help the welterweight star get back to his best.
In his bid to claim the undisputed welterweight championship back in July 2023, unified champion Spence endured a crushing stoppage loss to Terence Crawford. Crawford’s career-defining performance saw him knock down his welterweight rival three times before ending the fight in the ninth round to seal a decisive victory.
Back then, the U.S. Olympian was training with Derrick James, who last week revealed that the pair are no longer working together. Spence has a contracted rematch with Crawford but, as of yet, it has not been triggered.
Now, Robert Garcia has spoken of his interest in working with the former unified world welterweight champion.
In a recent interview with 210 Boxing, reported via Boxing Scene, the former Anthony Joshua coach said he thought he could draw on his experience of training Marcos Maidana in getting Spence back into shape for a successful future.
“If he reached out to me, I would definitely consider speaking and talking to him. I would love to, because those are challenges for me, too.
“Look at Marcos Maidana. He had the best paydays of his life when he came to me. Sometimes fighters need something like that. Maybe Spence needs something like that. He already has a great style. He was, pound for pound, one of the best fighters in the world.
“It’s just little touches. Honestly, it would be a challenge for me, too… I would love to talk to him about putting something together.”
It seems the ball is now in Spence’s court on this one, while Crawford has recently been linked with a number of other opponents for his next fight.
