Lee Reeves has undergone an operation and remains in hospital, two days after the knockout defeat to Gary Cully that brought the Dublin fight night to a sombre halt.
A friend of the fighter, who knows him from his time living and training in Lanzarote, posted an update confirming the surgery. “Lee has undergone an operation and remains in a stable but critical condition,” he wrote, adding that the next few days are extremely important.
Queensberry Promotions had said on Sunday that Reeves remained in a critical but stable condition and that more would be known in the coming days. No further official medical update has been issued since.
BoxingScene understands the 31-year-old did not regain consciousness after being stretchered from the 3Arena.
The circumstances have made the story harder to process. Many watching felt Reeves was ahead on the cards heading into the final round, with Cully having lost a point in the fifth for repeatedly losing his mouthguard. Cully then dropped Reeves early in the tenth and floored him again moments later with a clean left cross.
Speaking before the fight, Reeves had explained what the night meant to him. “I’m basically showing up and fighting for free just to show my potential,” he said, describing twenty years of investing in himself and a career built purely on love of the sport.
Support has come from well beyond boxing. Saint Patrick’s Garrison Church in Renmore confirmed prayers were offered for Reeves at Sunday Mass.
