The celebrations in Dublin were tempered on Sunday as promoters confirmed Lee Reeves’ condition remains critical but stable following his knockout defeat to Gary Cully.
Reeves was stopped in the tenth round of their BUI Celtic super-lightweight title fight at the 3Arena on Saturday, going down from a left hand. He was treated with oxygen at ringside and stretchered from the ring before being taken to hospital.
Queensberry Promotions said the 31-year-old from Roxboro, Limerick, is in a critical but stable condition, adding that more will be known in the coming days and that their thoughts remain with Reeves and his family.
Promoter Frank Warren said his team is in constant contact with Reeves’ camp and hoping for positive news.
Reeves had been getting the better of the exchanges before the finish, in a contest in which both men absorbed heavy punishment. He was floored twice in the final round and did not rise the second time.
Cully, from Kildare, improved to 20-2 but spoke only about his opponent afterwards, saying his thoughts and prayers were with Reeves and noting that the underdog had proved he could operate at a higher level.
Reeves is also an ambassador for Treaty Suicide Prevention in Limerick. The organisation posted its support over the weekend.
The bout was the third of the evening on the card headlined by Pierce O’Leary and Mark Chamberlain. British Boxing News will update this story as further information is confirmed.
